About the Academy

The Helen O’Grady Children’s Drama Academy has been operating in Auckland since 1992. After an initial period of 4 years the Auckland Academy was split into two territories – Auckland North and West, and Auckland Central and South. As the numbers grew the Auckland North area was divided into two territories; Auckland North and Auckland West. This occurred in June 2003. Joy Thomson took over the Auckland West Academy in April 2005 from the Executive Principal, Janet Mackness. Joy teaches at 4 of the 6 locations listed. She is looking forward to expanding the number of locations later this year.

Joy has been married for 29 years and has three wonderful young adults. The two boys are 21 and 23 years old. The daughter, who is 17, shares her mother's love of the performing arts.
Joy has been teaching at all levels of Primary education for over 20 years. "I feel very strongly that children should be armed with skills for life that will enable them to become confident, articulate young people. To this end I have always taken drama and music lessons at all the schools in which I have taught. I have written and produced many end of year shows for the schools as well. So you can see why I love the Helen O'Grady Drama curriculum. " |
