History

Helen O’Grady has created history by developing the first international drama organization in the world. The Drama Academy in New Zealand is just a small part of an international drama organization. The very first of its kind. And, we are very proud to say, that its creator, Helen O’Grady, is a New Zealander.

Helen was born on the West Coast of the South Island. She completed her Diploma of Teaching at Canterbury University; obtained her L.T.C.L. from Trinity College London as well as becoming an Associate Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management. She was well known throughout New Zealand and Australia during the 1970’s as a presenter of family and children’s TV shows.

Helen’s work as a teacher and producer/presenter of Children’s Television make her aware of the need for a self-development programme for children which would increase their communication skills, their confidence and self-esteem.

Using her extensive knowledge and experience in drama, Helen has originated and refined a unique children’s programme to develop

  • Communication skills
  • Ongoing Confidence
  • Effective Group Interaction
  • Self Esteem
  • Enthusiasm, energy and a private approach to life

It is possible for a child to attend classes for 13 years (from 5-17) without repeating a lesson!

Helen opened her first branches in New Zealand in 1992. We have steadily grown over the years to establish our academies throughout New Zealand. We will continue to grow to be available to enrich children’s lives throughout our country.

To date the Helen O’Grady Children’s Drama Academy is operating in twenty countries.
